Fish and Ski Boat

Fish and Ski Boats
By Lisa Renee Sherman

There are some individuals that have a hard time choosing between wanting a boat to mainly function as a fishing boat, or as a ski boat. A boat is a large expense item for any individual. Any consumer searches for a product that they can get the most for their money. Individuals that are family oriented also might want a boat that offers the most versatility.

Many are concerned that there has to be a sacrifice in quality if they wish to opt for a fish and ski boat. To some degree this is true. A true fishing boat is geared towards only the sport of fishing, and a ski boat is designed for that sport. When looking for a water craft that can do both, some concessions need to be made, but there are some very high quality boats out there to fit this niche.

Generally speaking, the water craft is either a fishing boat, or a ski boat that has various attributes that make it more versatile. The way that the boat is marketed gives one a good idea of what sport the boat is ideally suited for. A “fish n ski” boat is typically a boat that is designed for fishing but has slight modifications that enable it for skiing.

These boats tend to have more amenities that are geared for fishing. Their live wells tend to be larger, and offer a trolling motor or at least have preinstalled wiring to enable one. Storage is usually geared more for that of rods than that of tubes, wakeboards, and or skies. Their quality of fish finders can vary from high end to basic. Instead of a deck that is focused on sunbathing or seating, it is usually a platform with several quality fishing seats.

If a boat is marketed as a “ski n fish” boat then it should be understood that the primary focus is that of skiing with several amenities that are geared towards fishing. It is important to understand that most “ski n fish” boats do not create enough wake for wakeboarding. Typically the type of skiing that is done on these types of boats are slalom skiing. These boats tend to leave a very flat wake that is desired for slalom skiing. These boats tend to have smaller live wells than that of “fish n ski” boats, and the storage is geared more towards holding various lengths of skis verses rods.

It is important to know what the primary desire is for the boat. If one is a water sport enthusiast but also is looking for a boat that can be used for fishing periodically, then a “ski n fish” boat would be ideal. If fishing is the primary focus but one also wants something that can also have enough power to lift skiers then a fish and ski boat would be the match.

Typically most boats that combine the focus of fishing and skiing have outboards. By using an outboard instead of an inboard it frees up internal room for storage and live wells. The outboard also can generate power for lifting skiers. Before any purchase of a boat it is important to understand the desired purpose of the boat. Once an individual understands what the primary focus should be for the boat then the shopping can begin!

You should now have a better understanding for fishing and ski boats and now be able to make a more informed and better decision!
