How To Water Ski On One Ski
Waterskiing is a fun sport that has been around for quite some time now. It is similar to skiing on snow, except that it is done on water, as its name implies. The skier is pulled by a rope attached to either a cable or a motorboat. Water skiers make use of either one or two skis. Single skis are called slaloms and two are called double skis. In order to water ski, the skier skims the surface of the water with the ski/s while holding the rope attached to the boat or the cable.
Now let's focus on water skiing with one ski or a slalom. A slalom is a ski that has a toe plate and open binding or two bindings (one on the front and the other on the back). In slalom skiing, instead of the skis pointing forward, the slalom is positioned sideways but the feet are still pointed forward, with one foot behind the other. This is what makes it more difficult that regular water skiing on double skis. It is recommended that one learns how to ski on double skis first before attempting to go on a slalom.
One good way to learn how to slalom ski is to master skiing on double skis first, then when he feels ready, in the process of double skiing, set the binding on one ski loose and drop it. Then, when he is out of the water, he will step out of the loose ski completely and slip his foot into the toe plate binding on the slalom ski. The more advanced skiers do not have to go through this and simply start off In the deep water with the slalom already. This requires a more powerful boat and balance on the part of the skier.
So how does a beginner go about learning how to water ski on one ski or slalom? First, the slalom ski should be on the foot which is stronger or your "slalom leg" as they call it. Next, you pull the knee of your slalom leg to your chest and the tip of the ski points out of the water. The other leg should hang down with the toes pointed out.
The next step is to grip the ski rope the way you would hold a baseball bat, with the knuckles on opposite sides. When you are starting out, it is important to tell the driver of the boat that you are just a beginner. That way, he will not go too fast or try to go on dangerous curves. Tell him to drive the boat at a very slow pace in the beginning so that you can get a feel of being on skis and being pulled by the boat.
When you are ready, tell him to pull and he can start driving the boat at a regular accelerated speed. When the boat accelerates, remember that you should not be making any unnecessary movements, but should remain in one position.
While this is happening, your foot in the rear should be dragging behind you until your ski is flat and leveled and you are off the water. Do not try to stand up and just let the boat do all the work. Keep your back straight with your rear foot still on the back binding. Lean back and relax your arms. To stop, just release the rope and sit back on the water.
Now you know how to slalom ski! Now wasn't that easy?
