Jet Ski Boats: The Need For Speed

Few Ski Boats offer the thrill for speed like that of the Jet Ski Boat. These boats have the ability to rise up and hydroplane across the water at breath taking speed. Merely everyone enjoys watching one, but only a special niche enjoys riding in one!
The core heart of any Jet Ski Boat is the engine. For all die hard Jet Ski Boat enthusiasts this is where the magic begins. The makeup of a standard Jet engine is a propulsion system. Typically it is an inboard engine that has been converted. The main concept behind Jet engines is that water flows through a main pump that is powered by a propeller. When the water pressure flowing through the pump is high it will “propel” the water craft forward.
It is important to understand that there are no “gears” with Jet engines. The “gears” are determined by the placement of a plate that determines the amount of water flow in the pump. The plate is placed next to the nozzle that controls the water flow out of the pump. When the plate is completely up the water craft is in forward gear, and thus when the plate is completely lowered it is in reverse gear. When the plate is in half-way position, the water craft is in neutral gear.
Another significant concept to understand is the steering. The amount of water pressure moving through the pump is what enables the craft’s steering. When the water craft is moving at slower speeds, then less water is moving through the pump, thus making it harder to steer. One of the main aspects that cause skiers and wake boarders to hesitate when looking Jet Ski Boats is the amount of water that is placed out of the rear of the boat due to the pump. Due to this most skiers’s and wake boarder’s need to be around 100 feet back from the boat to miss the water spray. With other Ski Boats that do not have Jet engines they can move in much closer to the water craft.
There also tends to be less seating options due to the placement of the engine. The engine needs to be placed forward in order to allow room for the pump. Without any appendages, Jet Ski Boats do offer a level safety that other forms of Ski Boats are unable to.
